So I got my first tattoo today by Lucas at Beelistic Tattoos in Cincinnati, OH. It’s not how I pictured it in my mind, but the life and character that another artist brought to my idea is really special to me and I love how it turned out. There’s a lot involved in why I picked this, but I will do my best to sum up the idea concisely.
First and foremost it is inspired by the movie/documentary Man on Wire. I was moved beyond words by the film and I hold both it and its powerful meaning close to my heart. I personally have felt like I have lived my life on a wire, strung between two points and pulled in separate directions. I’ve been attracted to two very distinct and different lifestyles and personalities and felt like I’m two people in one. Finding the balance between the competing and parallel forces has been something I’ve struggled with and something I hope to obtain with grace and courage. I never want to be afraid of taking chances/risks or to strive to be who I want and hope to be. Philippe Petit’s talent, outlook, and persona will forever be an inspiration. The three figures are inspired by him and represent the different stages one experiences throughout their life and even day.
If that doesn’t explain it all, maybe this quote from the film will:
“Life should be lived on the edge of life. You have to exercise rebellion: to refuse to tape yourself to rules, to refuse your own success, to refuse to repeat yourself, to see every day, every year, every idea as a true challenge - and then you are going to live your life on a tightrope.”
I really feel like I need to see this movie now.
